I'm starting to think my desk setup is a bit too complicated

I spent several hours today tearing apart my desk setup and rebuilding it. This is the first time I’ve done this in almost a year, and it’s startling to see just how much stuff I’ve accumulated in my computer setup. In fact, here’s a diagram of the information-carrying wires on, underneath, and beside my desk:

Yikes.

And the power needs are a bit stunning as well - in order to plug in just the things in the diagram I need 10 outlets, which I accomplish with two power strips.

If I had the money, I’d replace the MacBook Pro, monitor, webcam, speakers, and external hard drive with an iMac. That alone would go a long way towards reducing cable clutter: four power plugs reduced down to one, and several USB ports fewer. And if I could, I’d get rid of the printer and live completely paperless, but sadly there are forces beyond my control that require I print things out occasionally.

I’d still keep the wired keyboard and USB dongle mouse, though. I have and use a Magic Trackpad that I didn’t include in the diagram because it doesn’t have any wires, but for some tasks, like audio editing, I really need the precision that I get from my mouse. And I’d have to give up my numeric keypad and side USB ports if I wanted to switch to Apple’s wireless keyboard.

Pragmatically, even though my setup is a mess, now that it’s all set up I don’t really have to worry about it. Who knows; maybe the next time I have to rebuild it I’ll have the money for an iMac.

Perhaps. I've gotten a bit of flack from one of my other podcast cohosts about them, but they work well enough for me. I got them based off the recommendation of Dan Benjamin and other people that say they're the best, for podcasting at least.
